Available, accessible, and affordable power plays a key role in the development and growth of the national economy by ensuring an adequate, secure, and cost-effective supply of energy. Pakistan is currently facing the issue of constant increase in the cost of power supply due to increased prices of RLNG and coal in international markets. Climate change has become a threat to sustainable development and developing countries are most vulnerable to it. Within the context of anticipated patterns of future energy usage and consequent environmental impacts, the potential role of renewable energy sources is now crucial.

Local fuels and renewable energy are an important area for development of power generation to escape from exorbitant fuel import bills. Due to this reason the Government is encouraging private investors to enter into local fuel markets for replacement of power generation with imported fuel power plants. Bagasse is one of the important local fuels produced by sugar mills of Pakistan and has a potential to generate 3,000 MW which can contribute tremendously to reduce imported fuel and save precious foreign exchange.
